The village developed in the early Middle Ages around a tower which was built as watch tower alongside the famous Via Claudia Augusta. The Tyrolean sovereign Herzog Siegmund the "Muenzreiche" (referring to his wealth), had the tower developed into a hunting castle and named it Siegmundsried.
