Sehenswertes im Raum Tiroler Oberland
Kaunertal Glacier
The toll road to the Kaunertal Glacier leads in 29 turns from Feichten in Kaunertal (1,287 m) past the Gepatschspeicher up to 2,750 m, directly to the Weissseeferner. This is where you can find the Kaunertal Glacier skiing resort which was opened in 1980. The Glacier panorama road is well developed and is amongst one of the most beautiful high mountain roads of the Alps.
Fliess sun slopes
The inner alpine climate, the warm wind and less than 700 mm rain in the yearly average created a dry spot in the upper Inntal which is unique north of the Alp’s main ridge. The dryness is even more pronounced in the attractive mountain village of Fliess due to its exposed south position of its hills, strong direct sun light and the resulting high ground temperatures.
Dry grassland, rocks, bushes and woods as well as crooked field stone walls create a unique, diverse habitat that is rich in species. An unbelievable diversity in plant and animal species, mainly insects, makes this dry grassland an area of international importance. More than 1.400 butterfly species, many of them nocturnal, can be watched here!
Pilgrimage church in Kaltenbrunn
Legend has it that the knight Erbo Schenkenberg built a chapel here in 1272 to do penance for a murder he committed. A miraculous image dating back to the 14th century turned the chapel into a place of pilgrimage for lansquenets. The church is also home to valuable altar figures from the 17th century.
Bernina Express
With the famous Pizzoccheri across the Bernina-Express route to Alp Grüm -unforgettable!
Nature park house Kaunergrat
This unique destination is situated at the Piller Sattel, the „interface“ between Kaunertal, Pitztal and Inntal and provides the most breathtaking view, the so-called „Gachen Blick“ and is an information and service center for all visitors interested in nature and culture. It opens new perspectives of plants, animals and humans with its extraordinary exhibition in the nature park Kaunergrat. The exhibition „3,000 m vertical“ is open every day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Guided tours have to be booked in advance!
Natural monument Piller Moor
Peat was still gathered in the moors and wetlands at the Piller Sattel right up to the 1970ies and the area is now one of the few remaining moors in Tyrol. A nature trail with presentation boards was created at Piller Moor in order to educate the visitor about the subject of moors.
Orchards at Kaunerberg
At the end of the 1940ies, a massive construction project started to save the Kaunertal from the very dry climate in the so-called Engadin window: a 12 kilometer long irrigation system through the entire Kaunertal, which was completed in 1954 and is the reason that today the Kaunerberg is one of the largest and most beautiful orchards in Northern Tyrol. The „Waale“ are also worth a trip!
