To see and fell the charm of Ried, which is situated at one of the prettiest sections of the Via Claudia Augusta, you have to keep your eyes peeled. No unusual village architecture is inflicting itself on the visitor. No big sights are urging to be visited. The extraordinary characterisric of Ried in the Tyrolean Oberland is the friendly people and the nature surrounding it. And, of course, the history, the traditions of peasant Tyrol, which can be found here - although sometimes slightly hidden - almost everywhere. The Maria Loreto chapel can be found very close to the Hotel Linde near the entrance to the Capuchin church. This chapel was founded by the priest Gaulrapp, who was a curate in Ried around 1654. This priest instructed the erection of a copy of the Marienwunder of Loret for worship. The popularity grew so quickly that the construction of an own chapel became necessary soon after. The chapel was consecrated in 1666. Up to this day, this holy site is still a place of worship and pilgrimage for many people, who look for comfort and help in personal concerns.
Chapel at the Lindeplatz. The lovely chapel at the edge of Lindenplatz contains a Christ statue (“Geiselchristus”) worth seeing, which was created by the talented baroque carver, Andreas Koelle. This ingenious artist, who lived in the small mountain village Fendels above Ried, was also partly responsible for the design of the altars and chancellery in the parish church (he also worked amongst other commissions in the famous monastery in Stams).
The Capuchin church can be found near the Lindenplatz. The church, which is connected directly to the neighbouring monastery of the Capuchin order, was built towards the end of the 17th century. The reason for the construction is said to be result of the counter-reformation, which intended to stop the encroachment of Calvinism from Switzerland. The venture was successful since the Capuchin monastery has been mastered by the men of this order since this time and people in Ried and beyond still have a high degree of respect for the order. The Capuchin Fathers also look after the parish, as it has no longer its own priest.
Parish church St. Gotthard: In 1320, the foundation stone for the church was laid. A chapel to honour St. Leonard was built back then on the spot where the high alter is now situated. The chapel was extended to a small gothic church from 1512 to 1526. The addition of the church tower as it is today was completed in 1550. Another extension of the church to its current size was built from 1715 to 1718. Finally, from 1975 to 1981 the parish church underwent a final comprehensive renovation to which Ried's inhabitants made a substantial contribution.
On the northern side you can find the mortuary, which was built according to the plans of Ried's creative architect Dipl.-Ing. Klaus Mathoy in a modern style. This sacral new building is an ideal combination of usefulness and aesthetics.
Siegmundsried castle: The castle was the permanent residence of the Lords of Ried in the 13th and 14th century. The Lords of Ried had a basilisk (mythical creature) in their crest. This mythical creature is still part of Ried's village crest. The tower was extended to a stately hunting castle by the Tyrolean sovereign, Duke Siegmund the "Muenzreiche" in 1471/72.
The seat of the court was moved to Siegmundsried Castle from Castle “Laudegg” (Ladis) in 1550. It maintained its role as the seat of the court until 1978. After that, it was owned by the Austrian Army for some years. The village of Ried owns the castle since 1999. (Sightseeing only from the outside!)
